Nuclear Treadmill Stress Test

What is a Nuclear Treadmill Stress Test?
- A Stress Test similar to a Treadmill Stress Test with the additional information of coronary blood flow, using a mild nuclear isotope.
- An intravenous line (IV) is started before the test in order to inject a small amount of isotope at peak exercise. The isotope is not harmful to the heart or patient.
- Electrodes are placed on the chest to record the heart’s rate and electrical activity at rest, with exercise, and for several minutes after exercise.
- A specially trained registered nurse will be present during the test, and will be looking for changes in the EKG and any symptoms of pain or discomfort.
- A blood pressure will be taken several times before, during, and after the test.
- The speed and incline of the treadmill will increase every three minutes, possibly lasting for up to 15 minutes, until an age related heart rate is achieved.
- The test will be stopped if the patient becomes extremely fatigued or develops symptoms, after the information is gathered.
- After the treadmill portion is done, the patient goes to outpatient radiology. They have special cameras that take pictures of the circulation to the heart. The patient lies on their back with their arms over their head for about 15 minutes. Two sets of these pictures are taken to show the doctor the blood supply to the heart at rest, and with exercise. The second set sometimes must be done the following day.
Why is a Nuclear Stress Test Done?
- This test obtains the same information as a treadmill stress test as well as:
- If the patient has had heart damage in the past.
- Any irregular heart rhythms.
- How quickly the heart recovers after exercise.
- Any areas of the heart not getting enough blood and oxygen.
What Preparation is Needed?
- Nothing to eat or drink after midnight, the night before the test.
- No medications after midnight.
- No ointments, lotions, or powder on the chest. Deodorant can be used.
- Wear comfortable loose clothing to exercise in, including walking or jogging shoes.
- Ask your doctor:
- How to adjust diabetes medications including insulin, and food intake, before the test.
- If on beta blockers, if you should stop taking 72 hours (3 days) prior to the test.
- Tell your doctor if you are not able to lay on your back with your arms above your head for the scans.
Registration
- Registration will occur in the Cardiac Health Services department. You will need to bring a picture I.D. (such as a driver’s license), insurance cards, and any paperwork from the doctor. You also need to bring a list of your medications with you.
- Plan to arrive 60 minutes before the test time to allow time for preparation.
- Enter the hospital through the Outpatient Building.
- Take the elevators to Cardiac Health Services department, which is located on the second floor.
