Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG)

What is an EKG or Electrocardiogram?

• An electrocardiogram is a noninvasive test that records the electrical activity of the heart.
• An EKG is an image of the electrical impulses that travel through the heart and determine the rate and rhythm of the heart.
• Electrodes are attached to the chest, arms and legs during the EKG.
• The test must be ordered by a doctor.
• You must have an appointment.
• The test takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Why is an Electrocardiogram done? 

• This test will help the doctor to evaluate the patient’s cardiac condition related to:

• If a heart attack has occurred.
• As a preoperative check.
• If the heart rate and rhythm are regular.
• If there is a decreased blood and oxygen supply to the heart.

What Preparation is Needed? 

• Do not apply ointment, lotion, or powder to the chest area. Deodorant can be used.
• No restrictions on medications, food, or drink.

Registration

• Registration will occur in the Cardiac Health Services department. You will need to bring a picture I.D. (such as a driver’s license), insurance cards, and any paperwork from the doctor. Bring a list of the medications you take,also.
• Plan to arrive 15 minutes before the test.
• Enter the hospital through the Outpatient Building.
• Take the elevators to Cardiac Health Services department, which is located on the second floor.
