Treadmill Stress Test (GXT)

• A Treadmill Stress Test records the heart rate and rhythm while walking on a treadmill.
• Electrodes are placed on the chest, and a blood pressure cuff on one arm.
• The patient walks on a motorized treadmill.
• The treadmill increases in speed and incline every three minutes.
• The patient remains on the treadmill until they achieve an age determined heart rate – generally less than 15 minutes.
• The test will be stopped if the patient becomes too tired or has pain or other symptoms.
• A specially trained registered nurse will be present.
• They will be looking for changes in the electrocardiogram appearance, rate , and rhythm.
• A blood pressure will be taken every several minutes.
• Preparation and the actual test will take about one hour.
• This test must be ordered by a doctor, and must be scheduled.

Why is a Treadmill Test Done? 

• The test will help the doctor evaluate the patient’s condition related to:      
• What the patient’s target heart rate (THR) should be.
• Irregular heart beats.
• The patient’s overall level of cardiovascular conditioning.
• How rapidly the heart recovers after exercise.
• If any symptoms develop and at what level of exercise or exertion.
• If there is an adequate supply of blood and oxygen to the heart to support exercise.          

What Preparation is Needed?

• Wear comfortable clothing to walk in, and walking or jogging shoes.
• Do not apply ointment, lotion, or powder to chest. Deodorant is permissible.
• No caffeine or smoking 4 hours before test.
• No food six hours prior to the test. Water is permissible.
• Ask your doctor:
• How to adjust food and diabetes medications, including insulin, if you have diabetes.
• If you should take your medications before the test.
• If on Beta Blockers, ask the doctor if you should stop them 72 hrs (3 days) before the test.

Registration

• Registration will occur in the Cardiac Health Services department. You will need to bring a picture I.D. (such as a driver’s license), insurance cards, and any paperwork from the doctor. You also need to bring a list of medications that you take.
• Plan to arrive 30 minutes before the test time to allow preparation time.
• Enter the hospital through the Outpatient Building.
• Take the elevators to Cardiac Health Services department, which is located on the second floor.
